discontinued. It included common components like a base station, wireless keypad, and entry, motion, and glass break sensors. In addition, it had the SimpliCam indoor camera, a panic button, key fobs, and last but not least, an auxiliary siren. In addition, it connected to the professional monitoring center and played a 95-decibel siren if any alarms went off, which meant it was almost equal to a loud, high-pitched blender in terms of volume.<\/p>\n<p>However, this wasn\u2019t loud enough for us to hear on different floors of the house, which is why we purchased the auxiliary siren as well, detailed below. Despite our experience, the siren base station siren was sufficient for our friends who lived in single-story apartments that covered less square footage.<\/p>\n<h3>Keypad<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27092\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27092\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27092 lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODdhAQABAPAAAP\/\/\/wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=\" alt=\"SimpliSafe Keypad\" width=\"785\" height=\"442\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.security.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/SimpliSafe-Keypad-2.jpg\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27092\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SimpliSafe Keypad<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The keypad was where we armed or disarmed our system using a passcode. One cool thing about SimpliSafe\u2019s keypad was that it was tamper-proof. Even if an intruder tried to smash it, the base station would have continued working.<\/p>\n<p>We actually tested this out and tried to remove the keypad from the wall. We found that the base station stayed connected both to our app and to the monitoring center. Of course, we tried out the entry sensors too and discovered that they notified us when they moved about two inches apart from one another.<\/p>\n<h3>Motion Sensors<\/h3>\n<p>Our SimpliSafe motion sensors did exactly what they were intended to. We didn\u2019t actually break any glass windows to test the sensor out, but we did play a sound of glass breaking and found that the glass break sensor responded as we expected.<\/p>\n<h3>SimpliCam<\/h3>\n<p>SimpliSafe has two options for cameras: The indoor SimpliCam and the new wire-free SimpliSafe outdoor camera. In our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.security.org\/security-cameras\/simplicam\/review\/\">SimpliCam review<\/a>, we were impressed with this plug-in device. It even had a stainless steel privacy shutter, which we liked on those days when we felt like Big Brother really was keeping tabs on us. Like most people, we weren\u2019t interested in being watched 24\/7, especially when our security system was disarmed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27095\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27095\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27095 lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODdhAQABAPAAAP\/\/\/wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=\" alt=\"SimpliCam\" width=\"785\" height=\"442\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.security.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/SimpliCam-1.jpg\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27095\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SimpliCam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"page-tip pro-tip\">\n<div class=\"tip-icon\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"copy\">\n<p><strong>PRO TIP:<\/strong> We made sure to test out each of the systems\u2019 components after we installed them to ensure that they connected with the app properly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>SimpliSafe Outdoor Camera<\/h3>\n<p>The newest addition to SimpliSafe\u2019s equipment lineup is the outdoor camera. It records video at 1080p, which is an improvement over the indoor SimpliCam that maxes out at 720p. It also boasts a 140-degree field of view, color night vision, and a motion-activated spotlight. And, it echoes the simplicity and DIY-friendly approach SimpliSafe fans have grown to love.<\/p>\n<p>Unlink a Ring or Nest cam, however, the SimpliSafe outdoor camera doesn\u2019t work as a standalone camera. The camera will only record video and connect the camera to your home Wi-Fi if you pair it with a SimpliSafe system. Also, the outdoor camera has no local storage, but you can store video in the cloud for $4.99 a month, which is about average as far as camera subscriptions go.<\/p>\n<p>The SimpliSafe outdoor camera is wire-free, so you can install it without worrying about proximity to power outlets (though you do have to consider proximity to the SimpliSafe base station). The camera costs $169.99, and if you want to store video clips, expect to pay $4.99 a month for one camera and $9.99 a month for up to five cameras.<\/p>\n<p>One word of warning is that the camera is rated IP65 for dust and water droplet protection, but it\u2019s not designed for temperatures below -20 degrees Fahrenheit. Those in super-cold climates might want to take note. Overall, this is a good camera, but since it\u2019s so new, it\u2019s too soon to tell whether it\u2019ll make our list of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.security.org\/security-cameras\/best\/outdoor\/\">best outdoor security cameras<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Video:<\/strong> At 1080p HD, the video quality on the SimpliSafe outdoor camera was better than the SimpliCam, and it had the added bonus of 8x digital zoom. 1080p is the current industry standard, and for outdoor video recording, it helps with capturing finer details like an intruder\u2019s face or a critter in your garden. The outdoor camera had a wider field of view than the SimpliCam, which we also appreciated.Not up to par with cameras that already employed a 4K display like the Arlo Ultra, which has twice as many pixels as 1080p HD, SimpliSafe\u2019s video quality was much better than many cameras that still only produced 720p. We were able to watch Gabe throughout the day without any problem, so although it wasn\u2019t the best video on the market, it certainly got the job done.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27096\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27096\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27096 lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODdhAQABAPAAAP\/\/\/wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=\" alt=\"SimpliSafe Video Display\" width=\"785\" height=\"442\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.security.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/SimpliSafe-Video-Display.jpg\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27096\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SimpliSafe Video Display<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Audio:<\/strong> \u00a0We loved using the camera\u2019s speaker and microphone to talk to people remotely. We just pulled out our SimpliSafe app and spoke to them directly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Night vision:<\/strong>\u00a0Overall, we\u2019d say that we were impressed by the SimpliCam\u2019s infrared night vision. We got a pretty clear picture of Gabe with absolutely no light entering our windowless room. We knew some cameras like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.security.org\/security-cameras\/ring\/review\/spotlight-cam-battery\/\">Ring Spotlight Cam Battery<\/a> offered both color night vision through a bright white light combined with infrared night vision. We preferred the SimpliSafe\u2019s infrared night vision on its own because it was more inconspicuous. Gabe may have known about the camera as he tested it with us, but an intruder would not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15635\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15635\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15635 lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODdhAQABAPAAAP\/\/\/wAAACwAAAAAAQABAEACAkQBADs=\" alt=\"SimpliCam Night Vision\" width=\"730\" height=\"411\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.security.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/SimpliCam-Night-Vision.jpg\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15635\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SimpliCam Night Vision<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Storage:<\/strong> We prefer to back our footage up in two ways: locally, on a micro-SD card or hard drive, and through cloud storage, as a secondary backup. While the SimpliCam and the SimpliSafe outdoor camera lacked local storage of any kind, cloud storage was available either on its own or lumped with professional monitoring.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Artificial intelligence:\u00a0<\/strong>Many cameras in the industry are packed with A.I.-enabled features like person detection and facial recognition. Unfortunately, the SimpliCam lacked facial recognition. However, it included special heat sensors that knew the difference between humans and animals, otherwise known as person detection. That cut down on the number of false alarms we received each day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Panic Button<\/h3>\n<p>SimpliSafe\u2019s panic button enabled us to contact emergency services with just the click of a button. If we couldn\u2019t reach our alarm or call 911, we weren\u2019t left to deal with a tricky or dangerous situation on our own. In the end, the panic button had the potential to get us help just as quickly, if not sooner, than calling 911.<\/p>\n<h3>Key fobs<\/h3>\n<p>Another backup option was the key fobs, which combined the panic button and the keypad. The panic button and keypad allowed us to arm and disarm our system, minus the passcode, of course. We weren\u2019t notified about every car that passed, just human visitors. Nearly everything was wireless and connected with the base station, which conveyed information by speaking out loud, sending notifications to our app, and even changing the color of the LED strip at its base.<\/p>\n<p>Once we\u2019d installed the system, the firmware updates were automatic, so it didn\u2019t require any maintenance post-installation. For the most part, we felt SimpiSafe\u2019s email customer support was timely in response. Once, they responded within the same day. Another time, it took a day to respond, and once it took five days, so the average stood at two days, which was not bad.<\/p>\n<p>However, for the fastest support, we had to call SimpliSafe directly.
